The celebrities in my life are not the Kardashians, Taylor Swift, JLo, Beyonce, today’s TikTok star, or the latest political figure. Sure, these types of celebs entertain me from time to time, but they are not the people I want to keep up with, and yet, they are all over my social media, even those I don’t follow somehow sneak onto my feed.
The celebrities in my life may show off accomplishments, promote something for their small business, and show the highlight reel of their lives. And then there are some that don’t show anything at all. When I talk to them in real life is when I get to know what’s been going on.
The celebrities in my life are:
My kids – I’m interested in anything and everything that they’re doing.
My husband – My person to begin and end every day with.
My coworkers – They make work worth working and keep the day moving.
My brothers – Always keeping me up to date with the latest political wit.
Other extended family members – Provide nostalgia and a walk down memory lane when we gather.
My friends – I love to share laughs and stories with.
In addition to – Community members, old schoolmates, the waitress at my favorite restaurant, my neighbors, teachers, convenience store clerks, friends of friends, relatives of friends. The list can go on and on.
The celebrities in my life are not obscenely rich, famous, or overly glamourous, but they are real. They are people who I’ve shared a moment with and have connected with at one point or another. Some I haven’t seen in a long time, making it even more special when I do. Too much of my time is spent focusing on the big celebrities, not really by choice, but more out of the convenience of the scroll. When I think about social media, for me, it’s really become anti-social media, stealing my time to focus on real people and real life, for big named celebrities, marketing campaigns, and memes. I want to get back to less scrolling and more real life connections.
